The Role of Grandparents in a Family Crisis

Updated: Oct 7, 2022

Every family faces crises at some point. What is the Grandparents’ role in a family crisis affecting our children and grandchildren? Number one, we are the support. We offer shoulders to cry on, ears to listen, and voices of compassion to soothe and calm. Grandparents may need to fill financial gaps if we’re able. We may also need to take more active roles or adapt our own lives if circumstances warrant it.

As grandparents, we hold a unique position in the lives of our children and grandchildren. If relationships are strong, we are the trusted, older, wiser persons they can turn to in times of trouble. We can give advice, encouragement, and hope. I’ve even seen grandparents set aside their plans, retire early, and take up the care of their Grands in extreme circumstances.

Today, I encourage you to do a quick life experience inventory. Think about the skills you’ve developed, the lessons you’ve learned, and your own financial/work/living situation. If a crisis occurred in your family, how would you be able to offer assistance? What values would guide your decision-making in the process?

While I hope you never have to face anything beyond the typical; Preparation and consideration of how you would manage a family crisis may prove invaluable should an issue arise. We need not dwell in the negative to be prepared and supportive should the unthinkable occur. The Grands we love without a reserve may be the recipients of such preparation one day. That should be encouragement enough to spend a little time thinking ahead!
